Communion

in the summer it’s cooler
under the maple
I take off my shoes
to walk through the grass
or press my foot
against the body
of a tree
I break my bread with the ducks
and the fish
if you’re quiet
at dusk
you can see bats sipping wine
from the lake
I might come here to die
one day
when I’m old and tusky
